Transformative approach

"The transformative approach is based on the perception of conflict as a crisis of human interaction. People need help in overcoming this crisis and in restoring constructive interactions. We start from the belief that the occurrence of conflict leads to a destabilization in perceptions not only of themselves but also of each other, so that participants in conflict interact with each other in ways that make them simultaneously more vulnerable and self-centered than they were before the conflict occurred. Thus, people in conflict experience both relative weakness and relative self-centredness, leading to negative conflict dynamics. Interaction between people quickly fails and moves to mutually destructive, alienating and dehumanizing characteristics."

"The transformative approach is based on the assumption that despite the potentially destructive effects of conflict, people are able to return to personal strength or self-confidence (shifts to empowerment) and to openness, receptivity to others (shifts to acceptance). The goal of the transformative professional is to promote the parties' capacity for conflict transformation (constructive change in the quality of interaction) through supporting the parties' efforts to achieve empowerment and mutual recognition."

In the Czech Republic, the guarantor of the transformative approach is Institut transformace konfliktu.
